Eine Stadt wird nie fertig, was wohl auch gut ist. Zumindest für die lokale Bauindustrie. Als Anwohner sieht die ganze Sache etwas anders aus. Dieses Jahr neue Werkleitungen, nächstes Jahr ein Update für die Geleise der Strassenbahn und noch ein Jahr später wird es höchste Zeit für Fahrradwege aus rotem Marmor (rutschig wenn nass). Manchmal wünscht man sich die Zeiten zurück, als der Bau einer mittelgrossen Kathedrale die finanziellen Mittel für die nächsten 100 Jahre absorbierte.

A town never finishes, which is probably a good thing. At least for the local construction industry. As a resident, the whole thing looks a little different. This year new water pipes, next year an update for the tracks of the tram and still one year later it is high time for bicycle paths made of red marble (slippery when wet). Sometimes one wishes to go back to the times when the construction of a medium-sized cathedral absorbed the financial resources for the next 100 years.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe sagte: „Jeder muß wissen, worauf er bei einer Reise zu sehen hat und was seine Sache ist“. Ganz offensichtlich gab es damals noch keine Touristen, die für viel Geld hierher kommen, nur um beim Kauf einer Uhr zu sparen. Denn Goethe stellte ebenso fest: „Die beste Bildung findet ein gescheiter Mensch auf Reisen“. Aber eben, nur wenn man reist um sich zu bilden. 

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe said: „Everyone must know what he should see on a voyage and what his purpose is“. Obviously, there were no tourists who came here for a lot of money just to save money when buying a watch. Because Goethe also stated: „A wise person finds the best education when travelling“. But only if one travels to educate oneself.

Es fühlt sich komisch an, wenn man sein Zimmer in einen Koffer leeren muss, Bücher, Kleider, Notizen, und wenn man das letzte Mal durch liebgewordene Gassen streift.

Es gab Zeiten, da musste man als Fahrer englischer Autos recht hart im Nehmen sein. Als British Leyland während dreissig Jahren am Konkurs vorbei schrammte, war wohl auch richtig schwierig, verlässliche Autos zu bauen. Einige Modelle – so wie zum Beispiel der Defender – haben es trotzdem kaum verbessert bis in unsere Zeit geschafft. Ganz offensichtlich hat der Fahrer dieses Fahrzuges eine Strategie gefunden, mit dieser Situation umzugehen.

There were times when drivers of English cars had to be quite tough. When British Leyland struggled for thirty years at the edge of bankruptcy, it was probably really difficult to build reliable cars. Some models – such as the Defender, for example – have made it hardly improved until nowadays. Obviously, the driver of this vehicle has found a strategy to deal with this situation.

Warum empfindet man es eigentlich als rührend, wenn sich ein altes Ehepaar beim gemeinsamen Spaziergang an der Hand hält? So unnatürlich ist das nicht. Trotz einer Scheidungsrate von 50% müsste es das doch recht häufig geben. Irgendetwas muss bei den anderen 49.9% auch schiefgelaufen sein, dass man nur 0.1% händehaltende Senioren antrifft. Eigentlich traurig.

Why do you actually feel touched when an old couple holds each other’s hands during a walk together? It’s not that unnatural. Despite a divorce rate of 50%, this should happen quite often. Something must have gone wrong with the other 49.9% that one only meets 0.1% hand holding seniors. Sad, actually.

Es ist heutzutage wirklich schwer, noch innovative Produkte auf den Markt zu bringen. Fast alle Lebensbereiche sind mehr als gut abgedeckt. Aber eben nur fast alle – da macht ein Unternehmen aus der arg gebeutelten Modebranche den offensichtlich mutigen Schritt, als erster Anbieter Handtaschen 4.0 zu entwicklen. Wie so oft allerdings, ist es auch in diesem Fall wohl besser, auf die zweite oder dritte Weiterentwicklung des Produktes zu warten.

As so often, however, it is probably better to wait for the second or third improvement of the product.

Es gibt wenig Landschaften, die so aussergewöhnlich schön sind, wie das Engadin. Das haben viele Leute bemerkt – sehr viele sogar. In den Hotspots des Hochtals herrscht viel Betrieb und die Immobilienmakler reiben sich die Hände wund. Trotzdem gibt es viele unberührte Orte mit grandioser Aussicht. Offensichtlich wird gründlich geplant, gezont und geschützt. Haben wir hier einen der wenigen Fälle vor uns, wo pingelige Beamte durchaus einen Wert haben?

There are few landscapes as exceptionally beautiful as the Engadine. A lot of people have noticed that – a whole lot of people have. In the hotspots of the high valley there is a lot of activity and the real estate agents rub their hands sore. Nevertheless, there are many untouched places with magnificent views. Obviously, planning, zoning and protection is thorough. Do we have one of the few cases here where nitpicking officials have some value?

Ein Youtube Video zeigt, wie in naher Zukunft hunderte von winzigen Killerdrohnen für kleines Geld gezielte Tötungen vornehmen können. Das ist beängstigend, aber wohl doch noch etwas weiter weg, als populärwissenschaftliche Publikationen uns vermitteln. Die wirkliche Gefahr liegt in der schleichenden Entmachtung des Menschen aus seiner Führungsrolle. Diesem Traktor scheint jedenfalls nur noch ein Softwareupdate zu fehlen, um um das Fürchten zu lernen.

A Youtube video shows how hundreds of tiny killer drones can make targeted killings for little money in the near future. This is frightening, but probably a little further away than popular scientific publications tell us. The real danger lies in the creeping removal of man from his leadership role. In any case, this tractor seems to only need a software update to scare us.

Wir alle wissen es ja: Die grossartige Natur ist einer der wichtigen Rohstoffe in diesem Land. Das Familiensilber gewissermassen, welches man über Generationen hegen und pflegen soll. Soll uns diese seltsame Installation an unsere Verantwortung erinnern? Das ist wohl zuviel der Interpretation – vermutlich wurde hier einfach das Restbudget einer Kulturstiftung ausgenutzt, und kommunales Silber ins Wasser gesetzt.

We all know that magnificent nature is one of the most important resources of this country. The family silver, so to speak, which should be treasured and maintained over generations. Is this strange installation supposed to remind us of our responsibility? This is probably too much of an interpretation – a residual budget of a cultural foundation was supposedly used here, and municipal silver was dumped in the water.
