In nur einem Monat wurden wir von einem Land der Sorglosen zu einem Land der Sorgsamen. Der allergrösste Teil der Bevölkerung vertraut der Regierung, welche unaufgeregt und und anhand wissenschaftlicher Fakten durch die Krise führt, und befolgt die Anweisungen mit solidem Bürgersinn. Auch wenn die wirtschaftlichen Schäden noch nicht absehbar sind, darf man durchaus hoffen, dass auch positive Effekte zurückbleiben werden.

In just one month we went from a country of the carefree to a nation of the thoughtful. The vast majority of the population trusts the government, which is leading through the crisis calmly and on the basis of scientific facts, and follows the instructions with solid civic spirit. Even if the economic damage is not yet foreseeable, it can certainly be hoped that positive impacts will remain.

Gespenstisch leer ist der ETH Campus dieser Tage. Studenten können damit sicher umgehen. Ebenso leer sind viele Geschäfte – womit die Inhaber weniger gut umgehen können. Nun kann man lesen, dass sich die Pandemie mit einem Lockdown alleine nicht beseitigen lässt. Ein Wettlauf der guten Ideen gegen die Zeit ist lanciert.

Spookily empty is the ETH campus these days. Students can handle it without a doubt. Just as empty are many shops – with which the owners are less able to deal. Now one can read that the pandemic cannot be eliminated by a lockdown alone. A race of brilliant ideas against time has been launched.

Overtourism, Corona, Hotel Löwe, Mulegns, Tourismuskrise

Die Reisebranche darbt des Virus wegen, und es ging sehr schnell. Noch vor wenigen Wochen klagte man über den Overtourism, jetzt über menschenleere Plätze an den touristischen Hotspots. Wenn man der Berichterstattung glauben darf, werden wir schon bald die ersten Konkurse sehen – Toursimover. Neu sind solche Dinge nicht. Als die Rhätische Bahn ihren Betrieb aufnahm, gingen zahlreiche Posthotels und Susten and der Nord-Süd-Achse unter.

The tourism industry is suffering from the virus, and it happened very quickly. Only a few weeks ago, there were complaints about overtourism, now about deserted places at all tourist hotspots. If one can believe the media coverage, we will soon see the first bankruptcies – tourismover. Such things are not new. When the Rhätische Bahn started operating, numerous post hotels and Susten on the north-south axis disappeared.

Der Umgang mit Risiken ist keine einfach Sache – und scheint mit jedem Jahr schwieriger zu werden. Um Leben zu schützen, ist eine bedingungslose Risikominimierung durchaus sinnvoll. Aber was sind die Kollateralschäden? Wie viel Risiko muss eine Gesellschaft akzeptieren, um nicht jeglicher Innovationskraft beraubt zu werden, welche ihrerseits wohl mehr Leben rettet? Wieder so ein Frage, auf die es keine Antwort gibt.

Dealing with risks is not an easy thing – and seems to become more difficult every year. In order to protect lives, an unconditional risk minimization makes perfect sense. But what are the collateral damages? How much risk does a society need to accept to avoid being robbed of any innovation that might save even more lives? Another question to which there is no answer.
