Es liegen anstrengende Tage hinter den Beschäftigten im Tourismus. Heerscharen von Gästen zahlen zwischen Weihnachten und Neujahr ordentliche Preise und wollen dafür allen erdenklichen Service – jetzt gleich. Keine einfache Aufgabe, wenn Personal und Infrastruktur am Limit sind. Es ist kein gutes Konzept, dass immer mehr Menschen zur gleichen Zeit immer dasselbe tun wollen.

Tiring days are behind the people employed in tourism. Hordes of guests pay respectable prices between Christmas and New Year and want all imaginable services in exchange – right now. No easy task when staff and infrastructure are at their limits. It is not a good concept that more and more people want to do the same thing at the same time.

Es ist durchaus angebracht, die ökologischen Folgen des Wintertourismus kritisch zu beurteilen. Immerhin verbraucht das Dorf Lenzerheide ungefähr gleichviel Strom wie die Stadt Chur. Gut, dass es auch den Sommertourismus gibt, wo in dieser schönen Region umweltfreundliche und sehr erholsame Ferien möglich sind – wie so oft, muss das ganze Bild betrachtet werden.

It is certainly reasonable to critically assess the ecological consequences of winter tourism. After all, the village of Lenzerheide consumes about as much electricity as the city of Chur. Fortunately there is also summer tourism, where environmentally friendly and really relaxing holidays are possible in this beautiful region – as so often, the whole picture must be considered.

Ein ganzes Skigebiet für die Weihnachtsferien vorzubereiten ist eine gewaltige Aufgabe. Ebenso das dazu nötige Know-how. So hat sich die Evolution das nicht vorgestellt: Der Mensch sollte mit seiner Energie haushälterisch umgehen, um bei Bedarf dem Säbelzahntiger zu entfliehen, oder die Tage bis zum nächsten Jagderfolg mit Grünzeug überbrücken zu können. Was also treibt den modernen Menschen dazu, am Wochenende bis zum Umfallen durch die Alpen zu biken? Vermutlich kannte die Evolution die Schreibtischarbeit noch nicht.

That’s not how evolution imagined it: Man should be economical with his energy in order to escape the saber-tooth tiger if necessary, or to be able to bridge the days until the next hunting success with green stuff. So what drives modern man to cycle through the Alps on weekends until he falls down? Probably evolution did not yet know desk work.

Ostern ist das Fest der Auferstehung, welches in diesem Jahr über Religionsgrenzen hinaus gefeiert wird. Zum Beispiel auch von den Wintersportorten, welche auf einen der besten Winter seit vielen Jahren zurückblicken. Glücklicherweise – wurden in vergangenen Jahren doch horrende Investitionen in die Infrastruktur vorgenommen, dennoch blieben die Gäste wetterbedingt aus.

Easter is the celebration of the resurrection, which is celebrated this year beyond religious borders. There is also the winter sports resorts, which look back on one of the best winters for many years. Fortunately – in recent years horrendous investments have been made in the infrastructure, but nevertheless the guests did not show up due to unfavourable weather conditions.

Hier bahnt sich vielleicht etwas Grosses an – immer mehr Wintersportler schwärmen von Langlauf. Abseits der Skipisten mit inzwischen (notwendig) hohen Preisen für Tageskarten, kann man sich für billig Geld auch auf Loipen offensichtlich gut erholen. Wie so oft ist die entweder/oder Frage wohl auch hier falsch gestellt. Alpin und Langlauf konkurrenzieren sich nicht. Sie ergänzen sich vielmehr gut und bringen Wintersportorten nötige Frequenzen.

Perhaps something big is about to happen here – more and more winter sports enthusiasts are raving about cross-country skiing. Away from the ski slopes with meanwhile (necessary) high prices for day tickets, you can obviously relax for cheap money on cross-country trails. As so often the either/or a question is probably also wrong here. Alpine and cross-country skiing do not compete. Rather, they complement each other well and provide winter sports resorts with the necessary traffic frequencies.

Wenn man Kinofilme aus den Fünfzigerjahren mit aktuellen Produktionen vergleicht, ist es kaum vorstellbar, dass die Menschen damals Geld für einen Eintritt bezahlten. Die Handlung ist unendlich langfädig, Szenen dauern Minuten anstelle Sekunden. Eine Aufführung wie diese hingegen, gefällt heute noch genauso gut wie vor Jahrzehnten. Und die Szene kann gar nicht lange genug dauern. 

If one compares cinema films from the fifties with current productions, it is hardly imaginable that people at that time paid money for a ticket. The film has an infinitely long plot, with scenes lasting minutes instead of seconds. A production like this, on the other hand, is just as popular today as it was decades ago. And the scenery can’t last long enough.
